Fundamental Doctrine
The basic and fundamental doctrine of this organization shall be the Bible standard of full salvation, which is repentance, baptism in water by immersion in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and the baptism of the Holy ghost with the initial sign of speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance. We shall endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit until we all come into the unity of the faith, at the same time admonishing all brethren that they shall not contend for their different views to the disunity of the body.
The American home is in a struggle for its survival. The attacks seem to come from everywhere. Who has not felt the pressures of paying bills, building relationships, and keeping up with the Joneses? Overcommitment, under achievement, and burnout join together to tear at the heart and soul of our homes. Only the strong endure and win. Some are able to perceive the danger, know the procedures of defense, and come out ahead.
While hunting deer in the Tehema Wildlife Area near Red Bluff in northern California, Jay Rathman climbed to a ledge on the slope of a rocky gorge. When he looked over the ledge, he sensed a movement to the immediate right of his face. It was a coiled rattlesnake and it struck quickly, barely missing him but snagging its fangs in the neck of his wool turtleneck sweater. The force of the blow caused the snake to land on Jay’s left shoulder. It then wrapped around his neck. Grabbing the rattlesnake behind the head with his left hand, Jay could feel the warm venom run down his neck. Jay wrote, “The snake made about eight attempts and managed to hit me with his nose just below my eyes about four times. I kept my face turned so he couldn’t get a good angle with his fangs but it was real close. We were eyeball to eyeball. I had to choke him to death. It was the only way out.” When Rathman tried to toss the dead snake away, he could not let go. He had to literally pry his fingers from it.
The story of Rathman’s struggle causes me to think about life’s struggles, especially as they relate to the home. At every turn we are pounced upon by these snake-like assaults that knock us off balance as they coil themselves about our lives. The home life of America is exposed and vulnerable to varied and frequent attacks from our serpent enemies. Pornography, drugs, alcohol, alternative lifestyles, Hollywood, divorce, the media, materialism, music, and many other assaults come from three main sources: the devil, our flesh, and worldliness. We relentlessly fight for survival, knowing that any one of these hits can spread a poison in our homes, a poison that is capable of paralyzing us and leaving us ineffective.
The home is under attack in 2007 more than at any other time. We need help to find the hope that our homes can survive. But where is that hope to be found? Most of the couples I have counseled did not know how to guard their homes or their relationships against the forces that would batter them. Many spend more time in buying or building their house than in preparing and guarding their home.
To find the most effective hope for our home we must turn to the Word of God. Jesus said, “Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world” (I John 4:4). Jesus also said, “If the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up” (Matthew 24:43).
The problems we face today are far too serious to be overlooked. Just being a Pentecostal is not enough insulation against the evil we face. The world’s system has always been opposed to God’s Word. But with prayer, love, and the disciplines of training and sacrifice we can protect our homes and our children. The most powerful insulation we have in protecting our homes is the Word of God. The spiritual resources contained therein are without match. Paul said, “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12). To counter the attacks of Satan on our homes we must use God’s resources—prayer, Bible study, a holy lifestyle, connection with a local church, and love.
Prayer
Parents should pray every day with all their children no matter how old they are. Prayer should not be the last resort but the first priority. Many times children do not pray because they have never had a prayer answered, or they do not see it practiced in the home. Parents reading the Bible in the presence of their children will encourage children to read the Word of God. When we show our children that Bible reading is relevant and that prayer matters, they will be more open to these disciplines than if only preachers and Sunday school teachers talk about them. We must train our children to have a personal Pentecostal experience early in their life.
We should be sensitive to our children’s spiritual yearning. We should cultivate in our children a desire to surrender their will to the Lord Jesus, rather than to merely please us. Children who have not received the Holy Ghost by age ten or eleven should be a cause for prayerful concern. Young people often turn away from Jesus and fall prey to the serpent’s attacks because they lack the spiritual experience they need.
Bible Study
The home should be a child’s most important learning center early in life. Moses had this in mind when he said, “And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up” (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).
We must teach our children the ways of the Lord during daily family devotions, using biblical storybooks for younger children and Bible studies for older children. Taking ten to thirty minutes each day for devotion will train children to love and honor Jesus and also create in them responsiveness to His Word. Devotion provides opportunities to teach prayer and biblical principles. The Pentecostal Publishing House has many good books and other materials on this subject.
Lifestyle Christianity
A Holy Ghost-led lifestyle is also critical. Many Christian homes are not much different from homes where Christianity is not professed. In a Spirit-led home parents take seriously the commands to “Walk in the Spirit” (Galatians 5:16) and “be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). This kind of home will not be perfect, but most of the time “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance” will prevail (Galatians 5:22-23.) Pressures and trials will still come, but Spirit-filled families will respond to the control of the Spirit rather than to the selfishness, anger, depression, and worry of the world. Much of the conflict in families is caused by a misunderstanding of or the refusal to accept the role that each member was designed by God to fulfill. (See Ephesians 5:19-23; 6:1-4.) Unfortunately, many, if not most, families neglect these verses. Husbands, wives, and children who are nurtured in an environment where the above-mentioned passages are obeyed will be blessed, loved, and respected.
A consistent Christian example is essential. The power of setting a good example in order to overcome the harmful forces that work to destroy our homes cannot be overestimated. A life that is inconsistent with the Word of God will give way to compromise. Compromise will destroy the life of a family member who is under the influence of a carnal member of the family. Consistent Christianity is a great blessing in any home. The Bible teaches that the models of godliness reach as far as the third and fourth generation. (See Exodus 20:5.) Wise parents protect their children’s minds—they do not expect their children to be mature enough to monitor their own habits with their friends, the games they play, and the books they read. Parents must screen children from wrong kinds of influence during their impressionable years.
The Local Church
The local church—a truth-proclaiming church—is our nearest resource. Only at this kind of church will our families hear teaching on unselfishness, love, sharing, giving, trust, and faithfulness. Also the church can alert us to jealousy, bitterness, and anger—things that destroy our relationships with God and with each other. The weekly time spent in Bible study and preaching services will reinforce what is being taught in the home. The local church provides an opportunity for the family to build friendships with peers that share like beliefs and values. The local church also provides strong insulation against the attacks of the enemy.
Love
The greatest necessity for a successful family is love. Everyone needs love, especially children. Teenagers who do not love themselves are extremely vulnerable to the ravages of peer pressure. Insecurity can be overcome when a child is supported by love. Parents demonstrate our love for our children when we spend time doing things together, going places together, and playing together. Being loved is a priceless heritage for our children.
There is hope for the home when families pray together, read the Bible together, submit to the leading of the Spirit together, set a consistent example of Jesus together, belong to a strong truth-teaching church together, and love each other. A family that does all that will be able to stand against the pressures that seek its destruction.
In summary, we need parents who will choke the life out of the serpent that is attacking our homes. Churches that create an atmosphere of love and teach the true principles of God’s Word will have parents that support the same teaching in the homes.
Sometimes it gets easy to forget that God is moving outside our local church. People just like you all over America are being blessed by God. When we get to heaven we will be with everyone who loves God and has been saved. The faces we will see will not be of just love ones and members of our local church, but of all God’s people.

The Euphrates River is mentioned only twice in the New Testament - both times in the Book of Revelation. Both references contain prophecies about the two greatest wars that will ever occur on earth. And they both lie just ahead!
The prophecy states that four angels are bound in the river Euphrates. When loosed, they will be responsible for the killing of one-third of the human race - two billion human beings (See Revelation 9:13-16.)
In the second prophecy, the Euphrates dries up to make way for the kings of the East to invade Israel for the Battle of Armageddon. (See Revelation 16:12-16).) At Armageddon, blood will flow to the horses’ bridles, and the fowls of the air and the beasts of the field will eat the flesh of kings, of captions, and of mighty men. After Armageddon, it will take seven months to bury the dead.
Because both prophecies mention the Euphrates River; many have concluded that the two prophecies refer to the same war. However, because of the different times at which these two wars occur, it is impossible that they are the same.
The Euphrates River War
The Euphrates River War of Revelation 9:13-16 will occur before the beginning of the final three and one half year period called the great tribulation. We know this because the beginning of the great tribulation is recorded right after this in Revelation 10:5-6.
In this passage, an angel stands with one foot on the land and one foot on the water, swearing by him that liveth forever and ever that there should be delay no longer (NKJV). This swearing that there will be no more delay is followed immediately by the declaration that the outer court of the Temple will be trodden down of the Gentiles for the next forty-two months (Revelation 11:2). This speaks of the forty-two months (three and one-half years) of the great tribulation.
In the next verse, at the beginning of the ministry of the two witnesses, they will prophesy for the next 1,260 days (three and one-half years), throughout the entire tribulation period. At the end of their testimony and of the great tribulation, they will be killed. Three and one-half days later, they will be raised from the dead and will ascend up into heaven in a cloud. immediately after this, “the kingdoms of this world [will] become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ” (Revelation 11:15). This is obviously the second coming of Jesus Christ.
This same swearing of the angel is recorded in Daniel 12:6-7: “And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half [three and one-half years]; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.”
This passage states that there will be three and one-half years after the swearing until all things are finished. Daniel referred to this time as the great tribulation: “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time” (Daniel 12:1).
The Present War in Iraq
The prophecy of Revelation 9:13-16 (the Euphrates River War) takes on extreme urgency when we realize that most of the Euphrates is in Iraq, and that the United States has 150,000 troops stationed along the Euphrates at this time. Could we already be in the beginning stages of the war described in Revelation 9?
James Woolsey, CIA director during the Clinton administration, said that World War III began on September 11, 2001, when the four airplanes were hijacked and the attacks on the towers of the World Trade Center and the Pentagon occurred. Thomas Friedman, noted columnist for the New York Times, also believes that World War III began on 9/11.
In 2006, Newt Gingrich urged President Bush to level with the American people and to acknowledge that we are actually in World War III right now. On May 6, 2006 President Bush did just that. He said that the revolt of the passengers on Flight 93 was “the first counter-attack to World War III.”
So are we in the war prophesied in Revelation 9:13-16 right now? It certainly appears that we are, If so, things will soon spin out of control, escalating into the most horrific war the world has ever known. If the present conflict is not the war of Revelation 9, then another conflict will have to proceed from the Euphrates at a later time.
Armageddon
The prophecy of the Battle of Armageddon appears in the Book of Revelation: “And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the mouth of the dragon, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty. Behold, I come as a thief. Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon” (Revelation 16:12-16).
Armageddon! The mere mention of the name evokes apocalyptic visions in the minds of people around the world - even if they do not embrace Christianity or ascribe to the teachings of the Bible.
Prophecy teaches that the Euphrates River will be dried up to facilitate the movement of the armies that will invade Israel at the end of the tribulation period.
On January 13, 1990, the headlines on the front page article of the Indianapolis Star read: Turkey will cut off flow of Euphrates for one month.” Knowing the two-thousand-year-old prophecy, my attention was immediately arrested. The article explained that Turkey had just finished construction of the Ataturk Dam on the Euphrates. in order to fill up the huge Ataturk Reservoir, Turkey was going to cut off the flow of the river for one month.
The implication of this news was amazing! The two-thousand-year-old prophecy says that the Euphrates would be dried up at the time of the Battle of Armageddon. Not until the completion of the Ataturk Dam by Turkey in 1990 did the mechanism exist for the drying up of the Euphrates. now, with the push of a button, the dam can be raised and the river can be dried up. The
Euphrates is now Armageddon ready!
Further evidence that we are approaching the time of Armageddon is provided by the present alliance between Russia and Iran. In describing Armageddon, Ezekiel portrayed Russia (Meshech) and Iran (Persia) in alliance against Israel during the world’s final battle. (See Ezekiel 38:1-6.)
In the meantime, UN troops now occupy the northern border of Israel as a result of the Israeli-Hezbollah war in the summer of 2006. I believe that these world-community forces will undoubtedly participate in the invasion of Israel at Armageddon as was prophesied by Zechariah: “For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle” (Zechariah 14:2).
War is raging today along the Euphrates River. The world’s last war will begin when the kings of the East listed in Ezekiel 38 come storming across the dry riverbed of the Euphrates. Endtime prophecies concerning the Euphrates are prophecies of devastating war. But they are the wars that will soon lead to the glorious second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Come quickly, Lord Jesus.

New Life United Pentecostal Church in Smithville welcomed their new pastor, Rev. Dwayne A. Cornelius, his wife Heather, and their children Alexis, Andrew, and Logan on Sunday, April 1st to begin a new chapter in DeKalb County history.
Brother Cornelius graduated from Indiana Bible College with an associates degree in Theology. Sister Cornelius attended Illinois Central College and majored in Law. After college, the Cornelius’ were married and moved back to West Palm Beach, Florida, Brother Cornelius’ hometown. There they started Forest Hill Christian Academy in 1993 and continued as directors until 1995 when they became the Youth Pastors at Tabernacle of Pentecost in West Palm Beach. The Cornelius’ were the founders of R.O.K. (Reaching Our Kids) Youth Conference, which continues to be a dynamic conference for young people. Brother and Sister Cornelius were a part of the Florida District Youth Team from 1997-2003. They transferred to first Pentecostal Church of Palm Bay, Florida in 2001, to be a part of their ministry staff. Then Brother Cornelius became the Assistant Pastor at the First United Pentecostal Church in Jacksonville, Florida in 2003, and now the Lord has sent them to Smithville, Tennessee.
We are honored to welcome the Cornelius’ as they become a part of the New Life United Pentecostal Church family. We know they will have a positive effect on our community, because they are people who truly love God and put him first in their lives.
It was with heartfelt sadness that we accepted the resignation of Brother Paul and Sister Gayra Sanders in January because of Brother Sanders’ health problems. Brother Sanders had been pastoring in DeKalb County since 1985, and played a huge part in the merger of the three churches there (Smithville First Church, Calvary, and Laurel Hill). Both he and Sister Sanders will be sadly missed, and our love and prayers are with them. They have left a strong foundation in DeKalb County for Brother and Sister Cornelius to build upon and one that is ready for a harvest of souls and great revival.
